How to Manage Your Influences

Influence

The influences that shape your writing can be a boon and a challenge. Striking the right balance between drawing inspiration from others and staying true to your unique voice is an essential skill for new authors.

Let’s explore some practical ways to help you manage your influences while writing without compromising your authenticity.

Read Widely, But Don’t Imitate
Reading is the lifeblood of writing. Exposing yourself to a wide range of literature is vital for expanding your horizons and acquiring fresh perspectives.

But beware of falling into the trap of imitation. While it’s natural to be inspired by authors you admire, your goal should be to let them hone your individual style instead of copying theirs.

Focus on understanding what resonates with you in your influences’ work. Analyze the elements that draw you in, such as their use of metaphors, character development, or pacing. This analysis will help you identify your preferences and incorporate them into your writing in a way that’s authentically yours.

Leverage Your Unique Experience
No two people share the exact same experiences or opinions. These aspects of your life can be powerful sources of inspiration.

Draw from your life story to infuse your writing with integrity. Your worldview will bring a fresh perspective to your work, making it distinctively yours.

Engage in Active Dialogue
Dialoguing with your literary influences can teach you a lot of useful lessons. Whether through discussions, seminars, or social media, interacting with fellow writers and readers lets you explore different perspectives and gain new insights. Constructive criticism and feedback can help you refine your writing while staying true to yourself.

Granted, interacting with creators who’ve influenced you can be a challenge. That’s why I make myself available to my readers and fellow writers through neopatronage. Get direct engagement with me through my Patreon or SubscribeStar.

Set Boundaries
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the flood of influences the digital media landscape inundates your senses with. While it’s essential to stay informed and connected, it’s just as crucial to set boundaries.

Don’t be afraid to limit the amount of content you consume. If it’s cutting into your writing time, dial back on social media. If you need a break, take one. An occasional internet fast can help you keep focused on what you want to say.

Consider scheduling dedicated writing time free from distractions or external inputs. During these sessions, focus solely on your thoughts and ideas. This practice will help you cultivate your signature creativity.

Practice, Practice, Practice
There’s no substitute for putting in the work. The more you write, the better you become at harnessing your influences.

Writing is a skill that requires practice to develop. As you continue to hone your craft, you’ll find that your unique style will emerge more clearly.

Anyone who asks, “Where do you writers get your ideas?” has a 180 degree backwards idea of writing.

Influences are all around you. They provide no end of ideas and inspiration.

But it’s essential to remember your voice. By reading widely, drawing from your experiences, engaging in dialogue, setting boundaries, and practicing consistently, you can manage your influences while preserving the authenticity that makes your writing yours.

Own your influences, but never forget that your voice is an integral part of your brand.
