How to Find and Keep Readers

How to Find and Keep Readers

The publishing market is always changing, and newpub is no exception. The challenge of attracting and retaining readers can feel like navigating a maze blindfolded.

Aspiring writers often ask me for advice on building a devoted readership. Let’s take a look at some proven methods.

Write like you mean it
Too many new authors skip straight to marketing without starting from the foundation: the writing. Every working writer understands the importance of writing with purpose and diligence. Readers can tell when you’re phoning it in. So develop a strong connection with your own stories, characters, and themes, and let that enthusiasm infuse every word you write. Authenticity resonates with readers, allowing them to forge a deeper bond with your work.

But when you write, you need to know who you’re writing for. That’s why it’s essential to …

Define your target audience
Identifying your target audience is crucial for building a loyal readership. Writers should have a clear understanding of the specific niche or genre they want to serve. By focusing on a particular group of readers who share similar interests and preferences, you can tailor your writing style, themes, and marketing efforts to reach them. Know who your readers are, what they want, and how your writing fulfills those desires.

And once you know what your readers want, you must keep giving it to them. Here’s what I mean:

Consistency and quality
Consistency is the bedrock of building a strong readership. If possible, authors should maintain a regular writing schedule to ensure a steady creative output for their audiences. Whether you decide to publish novels, short stories, or blog posts, strive to provide your readers with a reliable stream of quality material. Craft your stories with meticulous attention to detail, edit with rigor, and aim for excellence in all aspects of your writing. That dedication to consistent, high-quality work will earn your readers’ trust and loyalty.

While all authors should revise their rough drafts at least once, professional quality assurance requires professional editing. I’m ready to help you realize the best version of your story. Contact me now.

Then come back to this post, and we’ll get to what most of you came here for …

Authenticity in marketing
Building a readership extends beyond the writing process. It involves the effective marketing of your work to potential readers. In this regard, there’s no substitute for authenticity. Develop a unique author brand that reflects your writing style and appeals to your target audience. Authenticity in marketing builds trust and encourages readers to become ambassadors for your work. So engage with readers through social media, author websites, and other platforms, providing them with a glimpse into your world and fostering a genuine connection.

So how do you have positive interactions with readers?

Engage with your readers
Interacting with your readers is an invaluable way to cultivate a dedicated readership. Writers should engage with their audiences through various channels, such as social media, newsletters, and blogs. Respond to reader feedback, participate in discussions, and make an effort to understand others’ perspectives. By involving your readers in the creative process and demonstrating that their opinions matter, you forge a meaningful bond that transforms casual readers into loyal fans.

Now that we’ve laid out the broad strokes, let’s get more granular about the ins and outs of online marketing.

Leverage social media platforms
Social media offers a powerful avenue for authors to connect with readers and build a dedicated following. Identify the platforms that align with your target audience, and focus your efforts there. Give them peeks at your writing process, offer behind-the-scenes glimpses at new projects, and start discussions around topics related to your work. Encourage readers to share their thoughts; that way, you not only build a rapport, you get useful feedback. As with your writing, consistency is key to maintaining an active presence on social media. So update your feeds regularly.

Create an author website
An author website serves as your virtual hub, providing readers with a centralized location to learn more about you and your work. Design an attractive, user-friendly website that reflects your author brand. Showcase your books, provide information about upcoming releases and events, and include a blog where you can share additional content and insights. Make sure your website is optimized for search engines, using keywords relevant to your genre, to enhance discoverability.

Give interviews
Participating in interviews is an effective way to reach new readers. Seek out live streamers and podcasters in your genre that accept guests. Going on other platforms exposes you to a broader readership while showcasing your expertise and writing style. It’s also a great way to share current and upcoming projects with a wider audience.

Build a newsletter
An email newsletter gives you a direct connection with your most dedicated readers. Offer exclusive content like bonus short stories, sneak peeks, or insider information to make subscribing a good value for readers. Some authors only send a newsletter when they have updates, special offers, or personalized messages to share. Others email their subscribers monthly or weekly. Either way, make sure to avoid spamming their inboxes. A well-crafted email newsletter can foster a loyal readership and serve as a powerful tool for book launches and promotions. Join mine here.

Offer free or discounted material
Providing free or discounted books, shorts, or information is a proven method to attract readers and entice them to explore your other works. Consider offering a free short story or novella related to your main series as a gateway to your writing. This method allows readers to sample your storytelling style and become invested in your world. Also, running limited-time discounts or promotions on your books can generate buzz and attract new readers.

Whatever marketing strategy you choose, building a readership requires more than just talent and perseverance. It takes a strategic approach and a genuine connection with your audience.

It’s my hope that the insights in this post will boost your confidence as you climb the path to success.

Write with purpose and passion, define your target audience, prioritize consistency and quality, embrace authenticity in marketing, and engage with your readers.

Remember, building a readership is a marathon, not a sprint, so stay dedicated, adapt to the changing landscape, and allow your creative voice to shine through.

  1. I can actually feel Mr. Niemeier grabbing me through the screen, shaking me like a dog, and shouting “STOP BEING COY AND SHOW THEM WHAT YOU HAVE.”

    Very well, then.

The UNTIL MONDAY series is the story of the mission given Inspector Alec MacDonald by Sherlock Holmes in the autumn of 1889, three months subsequent to the disaster of the Palmyra. You will read a full account of that tragedy. You will read, too, of the fateful aftermath of a New Year’s party in Mayfair; of the exemplary obstinacy of Antonia Tibbetts; of the Legalist inducement and the one sunlit room; of the indifferent cadet, and the all-important dilemma of the coat-rack. You will read of the great realization of labor affected by MacDonald’s crew on April 27 of 1891, and learn the contents of the blue manila envelope.
