The Moral Calculus

Calculus

A reader lays out the moral calculus of taking infanticide-related medical treatments, specifically for the purpose of warding off Corona-chan.

Here is my take on things:
-The vaccines were created using cell lines from aborted fetuses. Some just in testing, others in production. Thus using them constitutes cooperation with evil.
-However, the level of cooperation is very remote and can be excused by other factors. In this case several clergy and theologians made a determination, early in the pandemic, that the risk of COVID-19 and the effectiveness of the vaccine made it justified to use, in spite of the cooperation.
-Since that point we have seen that the vaccines are much less effective than promised, especially over the long term, and to some extent COVID-19 is not as dangerous as predicted early in the pandemic. Both of these change the moral calculus so the determinations made earlier may no longer be valid.
-What does that mean now? It means that there is no “official” determination. You will need to use your own moral judgment to determine whether the cooperation is warranted. That does NOT mean that if you feel it is good then it is; you could be mistaken. But since there is no where else to turn for a complete discussion of both the pragmatic medical issues as well as the moral issues, you are effectively forced to make the determination yourself.
-While the morality of an action is not determined by your knowledge, your moral culpability is. If using the vaccine is illegitimate based on its origin and the pandemic cannot justify remote cooperation with its manufacture, then that is the case whether you know it or not. But if you honestly think it is 100% effective and necessary to stop a plague, then you might not be morally culpable for using it. All of this assumes that you make an honest effort to investigate the issue before making a decision.
-What makes this particularly complicated is that the aborted fetal cell lines are not the only consideration against the use of the vaccine. Other important considerations are its possible side effects, endorsing a dishonest propaganda campaign surrounding the vaccine, and endorsing a forced vaccination campaign and surrounding authoritarian measures. To complicate matters further still you might find a way to take the vaccine but oppose other problems (such as by getting vaccinated by refusing to reveal your vaccination status to your employer.)
-Put this all together, and the only people who are going to have a clue as to whether you sinned or not are you and your confessor.

How should Christians who are commanded by those in positions of spiritual authority, such as parents, proceed?

-Supporting your family is important and part of honoring your parents is obeying their commands, when legitimate. But commands towards evil are not legitimate. For a more extreme example where it would be clear that a parent must be disobeyed (in your situation it is murkier) consider the example of a girl getting pregnant and being told by her parents to abort the child (we can’t waste money on it, having you give birth out of wedlock will ruin our reputation, etc.) She would be obligated to disobey her parents, and if she obeyed them and got an abortion she would be sinning. So before you can say whether or not it is right to listen to your parents you first need to determine if they are asking you to do something sinful.

What about those who’ve already taken one of these therapies?

There are only two reasons to reflect on the matter: 1.) To determine if you have any guilt and 2.) so that, if you did make the wrong decision, you can act rightly in the future (and if you made the right decision, you can make sure you did it for the right reasons.)

It’s not my place to say whether anyone is in grave sin. Such matters are known only to God, the sinner, and if he seeks the sacrament, his confessor.

That said, if reading this post instilled a pang of conscience, consider going to confession.

Do note that the requirements for a serious sin are grave matter, full knowledge, and full freedom of the will. The act in question’s remoteness from abortion at least mitigates the first condition. The hierarchy’s muddled statements likely mitigate or remove the second. Again, only the individual and God know for sure.

    Brian,

Following the general logic you laid out, I’ll refuse to be further vaccinated for this virus. New information about some vaccines’ relative inefficacy, the potentially fatal side effects in some individuals as well as my skepticism towards mRNA vaccines, I’ve concluded the virus isn’t that lethal as first thought; thus I see no need for further jabs.

The next step will be to continue my opposition to enforced vaccination under penalty of ostracism. I’ve done what I can reasonably do to comply as minimally as possible with the passport and support all lawful opposition to medical tyranny.

Thanks again for the post and the general orientation. Let’s use the challenge to be the best sons/daughters of God in these trying times.

The state is more likely to kill me than the virus. But the US already starved my ancestors, so I say, “Bring it on!”

      • The math also changes if the disease can be effectively treated:

A nursing care facility in Spain that managed to save all but three of their patients (the ones before they started treatment) of their residents, all of whom caught Covid-19. Average age was 80 with the usual comorbidities. All patients were fully seroconverted!

Link to the paper to print & share with your doctor Antihistamines and azithromycin as a treatment for COVID-19 on primary health care – A retrospective observational study in elderly patients (nih.gov)

        TL’DR
All but the azithromycin and Lexofloxacine (antibiotics) are well-tested over-the-counter meds and can be used safely and prophylactically. Remember to check with your pharmacy MD (*not* your doctor) to be sure that any medicine is safe for you personally to use (allergies, drug interactions, etc.).

        1. At the first symptoms, regardless of severity: Every 12h “ceirizine 10mg or loratadine 10mg”

        2. With mild or recent onset symptons: “Azithromycin 500mg orally every 24h for 3 days and for 6 days if the duration of symptoms is prolonged”.
If pain or fever, acetaminophen 650mg / 6-8h
Nasal washing & gargling with … half a glass of water with half a tsp. of sodium bicarbonate.”
        3. Severe symptoms: “Antihistamines + Azithromycin (see mild treatment management)
Levofloxacin 500 mg / 12h up to 14 days of antibiotic treatment from diagnosis
Mepiflin solution, 50mg / 8h as a bronchodilator until subjective improvement” (COPD patients use usual bronchodilators)”
For “increased breathing difficulty, prednisone 1 mg / kg [body weight] / day divided into two doses untii clincial improvement … then slowly tapered down”
        4. For all close contacts, “including all asymptomatic residents: Antihistamines at the same dose as symptomatic patients.
        List of medicines:

        Cetrizine = Zyrtec
        Loratadine = Claritin
Dexchlorpheniramine = used to be common antihistamine in the U.S.; still used in Europe
Mepiflin = Fluidasa a European bronchodilator like Albuterol. Ask the pharmacist for comparative U.S. brands & dosage.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what one wants to do with the pseudo-vaccine or the various mask options, so long as a body can still catch and transmit the disease for which these tools were designed (Some background on pseudo-vaccines from a non-hot button topic: cows. This writer is a useful one without reading scientific papers directly: Bovine Coronavirus and Us – by eugyppius – eugyppius (substack.com)

Antibiotics aren’t very effective against viruses, so I have a hunch that everything but the antibiotics helped them survive. The antihistamines and the prednisone likely mitigated cytokine storms, whereas the bronchodilators, painkillers, and baking soda gargles kept them comfortable while they rode out their infections.

What they definitely got correct was the importance of early treatment. From what I can see, it’s important to start fighting the virus before it binds to too many cells; the more ACE2 enzymes that you have in your cell membranes, the harder that the virus will hit you despite your immune system.
