Take even a passing look into the online newpub scene, and you’ll find the X threads, Facebook groups, and YouTube chats abuzz with talk of Neopatronage.
It’s not hard to understand why. Those who’ve kept even cursory tabs on the state of publishing are aware of two indisputable facts:
- Amazon is no longer working.
- Neopatronage is. Spectacularly.
Nor is it just name authors flexing on oldpub to the tune of 8 figures. I know of more than one indie creator who’d been grinding away for years only to break out recently with a big crowdfunder. That we’re seeing such game-changing results when the average American’s disposable income is down something like 33% is nothing short of paradigm-shifting.
Though my attainments have been relatively more modest, it seems like every body wants to talk to me about Neopatronage since I coined the term. Last night I joined fellow author John A. Douglas on The Author’s Outpost to discuss this maturing creative model. Our discussion covered a wide array of related topics, including writing and marketing advice for newer authors.

Then be sure to back the Neopatronage campaign for my upcoming fantasy-horror novel. Picture Michael Moorcock novelizing Berserk, minus the nihilism, and you’ve got the idea.
